An exceptional 19th-century Neapolitan bronze by Fonderia Artistica Chiurazzi, depicting the celebrated Arrotino, or Knife Sharpener. The composition derives from the renowned ancient marble now displayed in the Tribuna of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
In classical mythology, the Arrotino is traditionally associated with the punishment of Marsyas, who challenged Apollo to a musical contest and was condemned after his defeat. The figure is shown preparing his blade, lending the subject an underlying sense of tension and drama.
This bust has remarkable presence, with the head projected forward and the deeply modeled features giving the figure an unusually animated and commanding character. The dark patina further emphasizes the strong facial modeling and sculptural depth.
The bronze bears the “Chiurazzi Napoli” foundry mark together with a circular foundry seal, important details that reinforce its attribution to the celebrated Neapolitan foundry.
