Monumental Full-Scale Plaster Cast
French School
Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Carrara Marble Finish
90" H × 28" W × 22" D
A monumental full-scale French plaster cast after Michelangelo Buonarroti’s celebrated Dying Slave, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Finished with a Carrara marble effect, this museum-scale work brings the presence of Renaissance sculpture into both classical and contemporary interiors.
Offered by Maison Palm Beach, this is a later French plaster cast made after Michelangelo’s original sculpture and is not an original work by Michelangelo.
Standing 7 feet 6 inches tall, the sculpture has extraordinary architectural presence. Its near-life-size scale makes it particularly suited to grand foyers, stair halls, galleries, libraries, and other interiors where sculpture can become an integral part of the architecture.
Michelangelo conceived the Dying Slave for the tomb of Pope Julius II. The composition is renowned for its twisting contrapposto, refined anatomical modeling, and extraordinary balance between physical strength and emotional surrender. The raised arm, gently inclined head, and shifting weight of the figure create a sense of movement that changes as the sculpture is viewed from different angles.
Historic plaster casts such as this were created to make important works of classical and Renaissance sculpture available for study, museums, academies, and private collections. Today, surviving full-scale examples offer collectors and designers an opportunity to introduce the scale and visual impact of museum sculpture into the interior.
